Properties of Waves

Sounds, light, and ocean waves all share common characteristics as waves, which are disturbances that transfer energy from one place to another without moving matter. Waves have specific wavelengths, frequencies, and amplitudes. Mechanical waves, like those in a slinky or on water, require a medium to travel through and come in two main types: longitudinal and transverse. By understanding these properties, we gain insight into how waves impact our daily lives, from the sound of music to the movement of ocean waves, and how scientists use this knowledge to study natural phenomena and develop technology.
